§11 Julius Magnus

Julius Magnus

(0011) Text: [I(ovi) O(ptimo) M(aximo) Turma]sgade. || Iulius Magnu(s) | Ɔ leg(ionis) XII Fulm(inatae)

Translation: For Jupiter the Best and Greatest Turmasgade. Julius Magnus, centurion of legio XII Fulminata, erected this altar.

Commentary: Turmasgade is a north Syrian diety (see Eck) – the province where the legion was located in the mid-60s CE. Legio XII Fulminata was in Judaea only during the Judaean War, so this inscription must have been erected during combat operations.

Provenience: Caesarea Maritima, Judaea 66-70 CE
