§63 Gaius Annius

Gaius Annius

(0063) Text: Γαίου Ἀννίου Γα(ίου) Ἀν(νίου) υ(ἱοῦ) ι᾿ (λεγεῶνος) Φ(ρετενσίας)

Translation: Gaius Annius, son of Gaius Annius. Legio X Fretensis. (Trans. Christopher B. Zeichmann)

Commentary: It is uncertain when legio X Fretensis was – or if it ever was – in Gadara. However, there is evidence of a Gadarene local who joined that particular legion (§158). It is certainly plausible that a vexillation may have left its Jerusalem garrison to do something in the environs of Gadara, but no evidence for such action survives.

Provenience: Gadara, Decapolis (Umm Qais, Jordan) 70-217 CE
